The volunteers brighten up the hallways with their cheerfulness and friendly smile. It is also virtually impossible to walk down a hallway at Fairview Hospital without seeing a volunteer. The hospital, quite literally, wouldn't be the same without them.

In these days of high technology, shorter patient stays and rising healthcare costs, volunteers are crucial to the hospital's long-term success. Our volunteers help us give patients the added human touch that is so important in the healing process.

Volunteer Hours:

  • Monday - Friday 8:00 AM 8:00 PM
  • Saturday - Sunday 8:00 AM 6:00 PM

NICU Hours:

  • 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Volunteer Program Requirements

Fairview Hospital volunteers must be a minimum of 15 years old. All individuals who would like to be considered for a volunteer assignment are required to complete the Cleveland Clinic Volunteer Services application and onboarding. Onboarding includes a background check, review of policies and procedures, and TB test. Some positions also require fingerprinting. Based on the desired role, other requirements may apply.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Information Desk

    Answer telephones and direct calls to patient rooms. Give directions to visitors if they need help locating various areas of the hospital. This is mostly a sitting position. We are in operation at the desk 7 days a week from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM.
  • Lobby Greeter

    Stand at the information desk and greet visitors as they come in. Escort them, if needed, to their destination. May include pushing wheelchairs. This is a standing and walking position. These hours vary throughout the day. This could be 7 days a week from 8:00AM - 8:00 PM. Various volunteer shifts available.
  • Courtesy Transport

    Transport items (flowers, mail, lab specimens, etc.) from point A to point B within the hospital. Items can be transported by hand or on a cart if needed. Discharge patients by wheelchair. This requires standing, sitting, and walking, as necessary. The office is open Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM. Various volunteer shifts available.
  • Gift Shop

    Ring up customers, help price and stock items, and assist with basic cleaning tasks (dusting and vacuuming). This is mostly a standing position. Hours: Monday - Friday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) baby rockers

    Hold babies that are fussy and crying in the hopes to sooth them. Job may also ask for light stocking of items. It is a sitting position. Openings are available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
  • Moll Center Helper

    Serve meals and drinks to the patients as they are receiving chemotherapy. You could also visit with patients while they are receiving chemotherapy. This is a standing and walking position. It is one day per week from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. One person works this entire shift. There are only 5 days total and only one person will be scheduled for each day.
  • Moll Center Greeter

    Instruct visitors to their location as they walk in the main door of our cancer center. The Moll Center is across the street from the main hospital. This could be a sitting or standing position. These hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Various volunteer shifts available.
  • Ronald McDonald Family Room

    Greet visitors as they come into the family room. This room is for families of children who are patients in the hospital. Various tasks are included in this position. Mostly a seated position. You would be interviewed by the staff from Ronald McDonald House and then referred back to us by them if you fit their needs. Hours/days vary depending on what openings they have available.
  • Crafters

    Knit or crochet baby hats for our newborn babies. Yarn and instructions are supplied.
  • Plan of Care Volunteer

    You will receive training on how to review Plan of Care Visits with patients. You will round on newly admitted patients and explain what Plan of Care Visits are and how they can help the patient understand their care while admitted into the hospital. You will help prepare patients review any questions they may have for their doctors/nurses. Shifts available 7 days a week. Morning or afternoon.
  • Teen Program Volunteer

  • Caring Canines

    If you have a dog that is over a year old, you can have it tested to see if it passes the test to visit the patients and workers in the hospital. This is a walking/standing position. Days and hours can vary.
  • Spiritual Care / Eucharistic Minister

    You must be of the Catholic religion and take or have taken the class to be certified. In this position, you would deliver Communion to the patients. This service is offered 7 days per week mostly in the morning.
