Avon Hospital

Avon Hospital volunteers are an important part of our healthcare team. They provide the personal touches that patients and their families need, appreciate and remember. Hospital volunteers are here to help make a patient's stay as comfortable as possible. Volunteers serve in several departments within the hospital bringing their talents to all that they meet.

We look for the following qualifications in our volunteers:

Volunteer Program Requirements

Adult Volunteers: 
  • Must be over the age of 18
  • Willing to commit to a minimum of 1 year
  • Complete the volunteer application
  • After your application is received you will be contacted about scheduling an interview to discuss what is available, our expectations and the onboarding process.
Teen Program Volunteers:

Our Teen Volunteer Program is a year-round program. High school students will come after school Monday - Friday from 4pm - 7pm

  • The minimum age to volunteer is 15 years.
  • Willing to commit to a minimum of 1 year, you would be scheduled 1 day a week for a 3-hour shift, it would be the same day and time each week
  • After your application is received you will be contacted about scheduling an interview to discuss what is available, our expectations and the onboarding process.

Volunteer Opportunities

The opportunities below are subject to availability.

  • Caring Canine, Adult Position

    Canine visits patients, visitors and staff. Dog must be trained and certified through a recognized origination.
  • Emergency Department, Adult Position

    Volunteer provides proactive rounding to better meet patient needs, provide comfort measures to patients in waiting room/treatment areas, provide diversion for patients and children, and help to Keep the waiting area neat and tidy.
  • Friendly Visitor, Teen Position

    Volunteers rounds on patients offering them social stimulation, supportive listening and assistance at mealtimes if needed. Help nursing staff with stocking supplies to par level in patient rooms.
  • Information Desk, Adult & Teen Position

    Volunteers help welcome patients, visitors, and caregivers into Avon, we direct visitors and patients to their appointments, answer phones and do our best to direct or take care of any issues that arise. We offer wheelchair assistance when needed.
  • MyChart Activation, Teen Position

    Volunteer visits patients who are not active in MyChart, we explain the benefits of MyChart, such as ease of making appointments, virtual appointments, and test results. We will push a code to their phone and help them sign up if needed.
  • Outpatient Orthopedic Radiology, Adult Position

    Volunteer retrieves patients from the waiting room, showing them to X-Ray then placing them in a room to be seen by their doctor.
  • Spiritual Care, Adult Program

    There are two different positions under the Spiritual Care, Eucharistic Ministers, a Catholic position, volunteers offer prayer and communion to our Catholic patients. Spiritual Care volunteers make spiritual visits to our patients.
  • POCV Education, Adult Position

    Volunteers visit newly admitted patients to introduce Plan of Care Visit (POCV). Our goal is to help them have a better understanding of what POCV means, we give a brief description of the process, the purpose for it, and who is involved in their daily plan of care visit.
  • Radiology Mammograms, Adult Position

    Volunteer will call patients from the waiting room; they explain the changing process to get them ready for their test and sit with them while they wait for a result.
  • REJ Lobby, Teen Position

    Volunteers welcome and guide patients to their destinations, offer wheelchair assistance when needed, help patients sign in using the kiosk.
  • Storeroom Outdates, Teen Position

    Volunteers assist storeroom staff with checking all supplies stock on nursing units to ensure that supplies are not expired.
  • Surgery Waiting Room, Adult Position

    Volunteer's welcome patients in and help get them checked in. They take the family back to be with their loved one when permitted and help staff with other duties as assigned.
  • Surgery PACU, Adult Position

    Volunteers help nursing staff retrieve patient belongings, get nourishment for patients with nurse permission, help turn over a room when patient is discharged before next patient comes out of Surgery, help restock supplies and offer wheelchair assistance when patient is discharged.
